HONOLULU CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE CALLS ON HONOLULU SALARY COMMISSION TO DELAY SALARY INCREASE RECOMMENDATION

(Honolulu, HI) – Honolulu City Council District VII candidate Jacob Aki issued the following statement today calling on the Honolulu Salary Commission to delay its decision making on a recommendation to implement a 3% salary increase for city leaders:

“While I believe many of our city leaders are deserving of the 3% salary increase, it is almost unthinkable to implement such an action during a time where nearly 25% of our residents are unemployed.

Many people across the state are suffering right now due to this COVID-19 pandemic and I believe that it would be inappropriate to consider the commission’s recommendation at this time.

I call upon the Honolulu Salary Commission to delay its action of moving this recommendation forward and to revisit this matter at a time when our economy and labor workforce is in a better state.”
